‘My artwork does not try to be radical: it shows that ‘becoming one’ with the world around you is not about radical change, but rather an innate sensibility. It is something we already possess, if only we choose to open ourselves up to it. My paintings sit comfortably in the space that exists between humanity and nature.'
Jasmine Dawn Sky paints with a passion for the earth, humanity, and spirituality.
She uses oil paints to balance abstraction and figuration, displaying themes of connection to nature, sense of self and spiritual connection to the earth and one another. Exploring gestural mark making, as well as layering, Jasmine utilises the medium’s properties as a direct source of inspiration when painting. Serendipity often comes into play as Jasmine uses an intuitive approach to her painting practice. Jasmine aims to show in her work that historical painterly influences from a time not so long ago, are still relevant in today's contemporary art world. She joins current conversations regarding subjectivity, collective awareness and spiritual reckoning. ‘There is a ritualistic element to my working process, creating sketches, meditative drawings, and paintings prior to creating a larger work. These initial works direct my chain of thoughts and feelings and channel my inspiration into my larger works.’ Jasmine follows a diverse creative process: when she develops ideas, there is writing, drawing and photography involved, to create a deep visual field of imagery and thoughts. This creates a dialogue between all her paintings because they are all linked through this inherently natural process. Describing herself as a visionary artist, Jasmine uses spiritual practices of meditation, working with crystals, and yoga, to enhance her relationship to her artwork. Visions that arise from these practices weave their way into her drawings and paintings. |
